In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
