Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
